MOSAIC CARPET
Park face deep relief formed by room size variations
The hotel for young urbanites faces the 250ha future green lung of Taichung city, Taichung Gateway Park. The concept establishes 3 green criteria, natural lighting, cross ventilation, ample overhangs, and an ultra simple plan for construction ease.
6 different capsules units, each 3m wide with varying lengths of 5-8m are stacked in rows of 11 units on both sides of a shot-gun 38m corridor that is open-ended to receive direct sunlight and cross ventilation. This ultra efficient plan layout results in a jagged exterior exterior form where protruding units become the solar canopies for recessed units. the urban park is “rolled” up the tower like a carpet, punctuating it with open courtyards and punched-through sky gardens that are connected with the hotel’s public programs such as lobby, shop, gallery, gym, spa, library, games room and movie room. This strategy creates a mosaic pattern of glass, greeneries and outdoor spaces on the tower, which becomes the signature of the architecture.
