The Architecture of XRANGE: Inspired by constraints
C HOUSE
Big L little X / two-faced L
Warm wood wraps the interior of the apartment to soften the existing jagged glass front walls. In the double height living space, an asymmetrical spiral staircase constructed from CLT (cross-laminated timber) and steel is a main focus. The stairs are suspended by a curved “L” shaped CLT hanger with embedded steel connectors, and supported at the widest curve by an 8x8cm “x” shape steel rod, a dynamic structural design element that hovers over views of river and skyline. Above the living and open kitchen area is a children’s play room shielded by a Hand-cranked L-shaped screen with two faces, solid wood or perforated stainless steel, to vary light conditions.
